Dublin, Ireland; carver and gilder (fl.1789-1812)
Freeman of the City of Dublin as a Joiner by Grace Especial, Easter 1802. He was elected Warden of the Joiners’ Guild, 1805-6, 1806-7, 1807-8 and 1808-9. Recorded at 17 Bride Street, 1789-1805; 113 & 115 Capel Street, 1806-12. An overmantel mirror bearing the trade label of this maker and dated 1809 is illustrated in Glinn & Peill, Irish Furniture (2007), p. 268. Curiously, the label gives the Bride Street address although by this time he was recorded at Capel Street. The mirror is signed on one vere églomisé panel ‘J. Phillips fecit’. This was probably Josiah Phillips, painter and glazier of 6 Wards Hill, Dublin [illus. Glin (1985), figs 1 & 2].
